Communicating Ocean Sciences to Informal Audiences (COSIA)

Public Group active 1 month, 2 weeks ago

For those teaching the Communicating Ocean Sciences to Informal Audiences (COSIA) college course. COSIA involves scientists at colleges and universities working with their local aquariums and marine science centers to deploy undergraduates and graduate students to teach the public about current discoveries in ocean sciences.

I’m the Curator of Ecology at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. I am also a marine ecologist with an focus on kelp forest ecosystems. I’m going to be part of the University of Southern California COSIA course this coming fall and wanted to see what I can pick up from others who have been doing this for a while.

Hi there! I attended the COSIA educator training workshop recently and have now been asked to lead a workshop on science communication at the Pacific Ecology and Evolution Conference (PEEC) in Bamfield, BC. This will be a fantastic opportunity to reach graduate students and professors with the COSIA philosophies on teaching/communicating science.…[Read more]

Hi Jude – thanks for the slides. We are doing the moon phases activity on Friday in our COSIA class and I’d like to use a few of these then. Interesting about your daughter and the moon phases. I think you might be interested in seeing the Space Science Sequence for grades 3–5. It spends [...]

Unfortunately it was cloudy here and we didn’t get to see the eclipse, but there was a full moon the night before when we did the Phases of the Moon activity. It was funny, after staring at the styrofoam balls for an hour, we walked outside and the real moon looked SO small in the [...]

This is a set of slides I used in conjunction with the Phases of the Moon activity to introduce the upcoming lunar eclipse.

Hi Catherine. It went really well and was lots of fun. I had about 20 participants (mostly homeschooling families) with kids ranging from 7-12 yo (two of which were my kids of 6 and 10). I did the “Phases of the moon” exploration for about 30 minutes, with some extra time exploring the lunar and [...]

Hi Jude, how did your moon phases activity go? I would love to see the slides you used. I had the chance to see the eclipse – breathtaking really. I couldn’t help but think about the moon balls activity as I was watching it. Thanks for sharing your great ideas. Best, Catherine
